Why Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation is a technique used to create a calm experience for our patients. Many people choose not to visit the dentist because of dental phobia. Avoiding regular dental treatment often exacerbates minor dental problems leading to dental pain and tooth loss. However, with sedation dentistry, our dentists can effectively treat many patients who have neglected their dental health for years.  And often, treatment can be completed “All in a day”!  At DCOF, we do everything possible to alleviate any unwanted stress regarding your treatment. Some of the benefits of sedation dentistry include:

Comfortable, relaxing dental visit

Little or no recollection of treatment (Oral or IV Sedation) – feels like sleeping

Lessened anxiety and stress during treatment

• Patients can sit still for a long period of time without discomfort

• May allow for fewer appointments

• Patients often feel their procedure lasted only a few minutes despite the actual length

After an exam and prior to your treatment, our doctors can assess what level of sedation will be best for you. To learn more about our sedation options at DCOF, make an appointment with one of our friendly dentists. We will discuss your needs, answer any questions you may have, and determine the best way for us to ensure your comfort during treatment.

Mild Sedation (Ativan combined with Nitrous)

The oral medication Ativan is taken one hour prior to your procedure. During the appointment, nitrous oxide is administered. Together the medications provide a mild sedation that helps keep you comfortable during your dental appointment. Ativan combined with nitrous will require a driver to take you to and from your appointment.

Moderate Sedation (Oral Conscious Sedation)

Oral conscious sedation makes you very drowsy and comfortable during your procedure. You will be given sedatives in a pill form to take the evening before your appointment, and the dentist will administer additional medications at the appointment time. Someone will need to drive you to and from our office, since the pill will make you very drowsy. You won’t be unconscious, but you will feel very relaxed. At the completion of your treatment, you will probably fall asleep for a few hours. When you wake up, you will have little or no memory of your treatment. Most patients love this technique because they often feel that the procedure lasts only a few minutes. In fact, we may have the opportunity to complete numerous treatments at the same appointment.

IV Sedation

IV sedation medication is delivered through a very small tube placed in the back of your hand or within your inner elbow. Because of its rapid effect, many patients prefer this relaxation option. You’ll be so relaxed that you may be unaware of the sights, smells, and sounds at DCOF, but still able to respond to verbal cues from your dentist. Patients remember little to nothing of their appointment by the next day making this option very desirable to many of our patients.
